How can I tell if a hockey helmet or face protector is certified? |
|
Any reputable retailer of sports equipment will sell HECC certified helmets and face protectors. Look for the HECC label on the back of the helmet and/or on the face protector. Also, the literature with the packaging will indicate if a product is HECC certified. Examples of the HECC stickers can be found on the Home Page of this site. Please also check the expiration date on the sticker.

Will HECC eventually adopt a standard for other pieces of ice hockey equipment in addition to helmets? |

HECC does not write standards, it merely adopts standards already developed by recognized standard writing organizations such as ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and CSA (Canadian Standards Association).

What leagues require the HECC certification for player and goaltender helmets? |
|
Any player playing in a USA Hockey sanctioned event or league up to the age of 21 (Mites through Juniors) or any player playing in a high school event played under the Federation of High School playing rules must wear an HECC certified helmet and an HECC certified facemask, or an HECC certified goaltender helmet and facemask while participating in that event or league. Players participating in an NCAA sanctioned event must wear an HECC certified facemask with a hockey helmet or an HECC certified goaltender helmet and facemask. Players participating in other leagues should review the rule book for their particular league to determine whether HECC certified helmets are required.

The HECC web site (www.HECC.org) contains a section entitled Current List of Certified Products where all currently HECC certified products are provided. If the helmet does not appear in this section it is not currently HECC certified and cannot be used in a sanctioned event or league requiring HECC certified equipment.

I have heard lately that some manufacturers have been placing HECC certification stickers on non-certified helmets. Where can I check to make sure that my helmet is HECC certified? |

That has occurred and HECC has taken legal action to correct that occurrence. The HECC web site (www.HECC.org) contains a section entitled Current List of Certified Products where all currently HECC certified products are provided. If the helmet does not appear in this section it is not currently HECC certified and cannot be used in a sanctioned event or league requiring HECC certified equipment. If you think that the HECC certification sticker on your helmet is counterfeit you should immediately contact HECC through its web site.

When does the HECC certification expire for my player helmet? |
|
The HECC certification sticker affixed to your player helmet provides the date that the HECC certification will end. HECC certification for player helmets has been changed and is now 6-1/2 years. The helmet should be replaced with another HECC certified helmet after the expiration date on the HECC sticker has passed. Damaged helmets should be replaced immediately.

All goaltender helmets now have a certification date. If your goaltender helmet certification sticker has no expiration date, it has expired.

At this time HECC does not certify any other hockey equipment other than player helmets, eye and face protectors (including visors), and goaltender headgear.
